Weather feed down
November 6, 2011
-
On October 13th, the Weather Channel sent an email to all weather.com feed subscribers which essentially stated the following:
"We are writing to you because our records indicate that you are a registered user of the weather.com XML Data Feed (...) This letter serves as formal notice to you that your access to the weather.com XML Data Feed will terminate at midnight Eastern time on October 31, 2011."
On November 5th, the Weather Channel cut the feed and all weather widgets that relied on Weather.com to provide weather information (Winstep weather module included) stopped working.
Even though it had little more than two weeks notice, Winstep quickly implemented a solution that relies on two alternative weather feed providers to get current and forecast weather conditions. This way a degree of redundancy has been added to the Winstep weather module: if one of those feeds fails in the future, the other will be used automatically.
The version that provides this dual weather feed mechanism (v11.10) is currently undergoing beta testing and should be officially released early this week. Your Winstep Update Manager will automatically pick up the new version within 24 hours of that happening.
What can you do in the mean time?
If you are a registered Winstep user you can download the private beta of v11.10 by applying for access to the Beta section of the Winstep forums.
You can still have information based on current weather conditions:
The Weather module in Winstep applications already provides support for two different feeds: one based on Weather.com for current and forecast conditions (the one that stopped working), and another based on METAR information provided by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
The latter feed provides very detailed current conditions, based on information reported by airports all over the world, but unfortunately no weather forecast. Until v11.10 is officially released, you can at least get the weather module to report current weather conditions by going to the Weather Module Settings dialog and looking for a location near you (usually associated to an airport) that features a METAR code.
